Inspiration, Education and Process

Inspiration

I am drawn to colorful, whimsical and lyrical elements and functional pottery is a must. I have dabbled in figure sculpture in the past but I am now focusing on functional ware that can be used and enjoyed in everyday life.

Education

I have been studying in community studios in California and New Mexico for  several years. In the fall of 2017 I attended Penland School of Crafts in Penland, North Carolina in the 8 week Clay Concentation class taught by Kip O'Krongly where I learned her techniques of slip decoration and hand building for earthenware. I have translated these processes to mid fire stoneware and porcelain in my home studio.

Handbuilding

I use cone 6 stoneware and porcelain for hand building functional objects. I use an extruder for the rim and foot and use stencils and hand painting for the decoration with either slip or under glaze. I mix my own glaze creations for dipping/brushing.

Wheel Thrown

I use cone 5-6 stoneware for my thrown objects and glaze with cone 6 glazes that I mix. I also  paint with underglaze or colored slip and use stencils  for the decorations. I mix my own glaze creations for dipping or brushing.
